L-Train Shutdown Mitigation

As a result of damage to the Canarsie tunnel after Superstorm Sandy, the MTA has announced that the L-Train will not be operating from Bedford Av to 8th Av for a period of time beginning in 2019.  14th Street in Manhattan is currently a congested thoroughfare that will not be able to handle the influx of commuters above-ground with the current congestion issues.  Our team conducted a transportation study to project the additional anticipated demand for 14th Street travel without the L-train running in order to determine the additional buses required during the shutdown.  Based on our studies, bus frequency must increase substantially and will cause extreme congestion issues.  As a result, our team designed options for a vehicle-free 14th Street to promote transit efficiency through the corridor.  These plans, presented to MTA officials, detail a car-free 14th Street during peak hours.  The MTA is planning to establish a plan similar to this.
