The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the rise of a type of alternative music that effectuated a downward gaze. More than a quarter-century later, we find people of all ages walking perpetually with their heads down while they study their smartphones, sometimes absent to the dangers of moving traffic nearby. It makes us wonder whether the next canvas for wayfinding signs and directives should be the very pavement we walk on.
