Our Primary Colors

From the 19th floor of this office building, the red, yellow, and green lights look like tiny bulbs on a Christmas tree--pleasant and disarming. Up close, they are instruments of authority, courtroom gavels, and at the same time non-agressive symbols of a system striving so hard to be organized. It's always fascinating to we as traffic engineers that the levels of safety and mobility offered by this very system are reliant on a social behavior learned only a few years after birth: that red means stop and, well, you know the rest.
